TB II Tower Defense X BETA Beginner Tier List & Unlock Order

What to unlock first in TDX so Easy and Intermediate clears fund your Expert roster.

Beginner Tier List

New Tower Defense X players drown in the shop. Dual paths, tower HP, air and sea placement, and a long unlock tree make random purchases expensive. This beginner tier list gives a practical unlock order and early S / A / B ranks for Easy, Intermediate, and the first steps into harder modes. Pair it with Getting Started, claim Codes, then graduate to the Expert Tier List once you own the economy and support spine.

Ranking rules for beginners

We rank towers for players who still unlock units with gold and still learn targeting priorities. Criteria:

  1. Cash efficiency — does the tower earn its keep before Wave 20?
  2. Coverage — land DPS, stealth, air, or sea answers.
  3. Teaching value — does it teach targeting, pathing, and HP management?
  4. Future proofing — will it stay in Expert loadouts later?

S-tier beginners picks are not always the absolute peak DPS in Nightmare. They are the towers that stop leaks, print upgrades, and transfer into late-game squads without feeling wasted.

Exact shop prices shift with updates, so treat this as priority order rather than a rigid shopping list:

  1. Farm — economy first. Without income you cannot finish expensive paths.
  2. Laser Gunner — reliable DPS plus stealth tools on the right path.
  3. EDJ — support that makes every other tower cheaper or faster.
  4. Juggernaut — sturdy mid-game DPS that scales into Golden Juggernaut goals.
  5. Medic — tower HP matters; Medic keeps boards alive under fire.
  6. Railgunner — unlock early enough to learn boss targeting before Expert.
  7. John and Commander — damage amp and team buffs once basics are stable.
  8. Missile Trooper — burst and wave clear for denser mid-game packs.
  9. Warship — mandatory practice for water maps; do not skip sea coverage.
  10. TB II event towers (Scout, Aviator, Phaser, Void Traitor) — grab through the battle pass and TB II Collab while you still farm Casual tokens.

If a limited-time reward or code drops a strong tower early, take it — then return to Farm and EDJ if those slots are empty.

Early S-tier

Farm

Farm is the beginner S-tier that feels “boring” until you realize every failed Expert run starved for upgrades. Place Farms in safe pockets, protect them with Medic or frontline HP, and reinvest income into your main DPS path. Early maps teach you timing: skip Farm upgrades only when a leak is seconds away.

EDJ (either path)

You will not out-DPS a coordinated EDJ aura. Top path leans firerate and range; bottom path discounts upgrades. Beginners should place EDJ near the cluster that will become the late-game carry (Laser Gunner or Juggernaut), not isolated on an empty corner.

Laser Gunner

Laser Gunner teaches targeting discipline and covers stealth holes that punish new boards. Keep one online before elite stealth waves; do not sell it to rush a vanity skin tower.

Juggernaut

Juggernaut is the training wheels into heavy DPS. It has the HP and output to stabilize Intermediate while you learn dual paths. Saving toward Golden Juggernaut later is a natural Expert goal, so early investment is not wasted.

Early A-tier

Medic

Tower HP is a real fail condition. Medic turns “one stun and everything dies” into recoverable defense. A-tier because it does not clear waves alone, but boards without sustain randomly implode.

Railgunner (start learning bottom path)

You may not afford max bottom Railgunner on day one, but unlocking and practicing Strongest targeting on bosses pays off immediately on Elite and Expert. Pair with Farm and EDJ discounts so the expensive upgrades arrive on time.

John (top path focus)

John’s amp tools multiply Laser Gunner and Juggernaut. Beginners often place John too late; get comfortable using Rage windows during dense waves.

Missile Trooper

Strong cleanup when packs thicken. Excellent A-tier for Intermediate pushes and a staple in many Best Loadouts.

Warship

A-tier overall, S-tier on water. If your map has sea lanes and you brought zero naval options, expect leaks. Practice Warship placement early instead of discovering water on Nightmare.

Early B-tier (situational but useful)

Commander belongs here for brand-new accounts only because buff stacking takes map awareness; it climbs quickly once you understand aura placement. Scout and Aviator from TB II sit in flexible B-to-A territory for Casual farming and event maps — strong, but not a replacement for Farm or EDJ on classic progression. Phaser and Void Traitor shine more as you enter Hard and above; unlock them, learn them in Casual, then promote them in your event loadouts.

Avoid spending early gold on duplicate niche towers before you own Farm, Laser Gunner, EDJ, and Juggernaut. Skins and cosmetics never patch a missing stealth detector.

Sample beginner loadout (Easy / Intermediate)

  • Farm
  • Laser Gunner
  • EDJ
  • Juggernaut
  • Medic or Missile Trooper (swap Warship on water maps)

Play this until you clear Intermediate comfortably, then open How to Beat Expert and the Expert Tier List. For gold income tips see Gold Farming. Role definitions live on Towers Overview.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Maxing a single DPS path while Farms sit at level zero.
  • Ignoring stealth until the wave that deletes your base.
  • Placing EDJ where it buffs nothing.
  • Bringing five land towers to a map with a wide sea lane.
  • Copying a YouTube Nightmare squad before unlocking half the roster.

Correct those five habits and your win rate jumps before you touch micro tech.

Next steps

  1. Finish the unlock order above.
  2. Clear Intermediate with the sample loadout.
  3. Read Controls if targeting still feels awkward.
  4. Move to Expert Tier List and Best Loadouts.
  5. Track new towers on Updates and the TB II Collab page.

Return to the Tier List Hub whenever a patch reshuffles early unlocks, and keep Wiki links bookmarked for official announcements.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Tower Defense X questions.

What should I unlock first in Tower Defense X?

Prioritize Farm, Laser Gunner, EDJ, and Juggernaut. That spine covers economy, stealth-capable DPS, support, and a sturdy carry into mid-game.

Is EDJ really worth it if it deals no damage?

Yes. EDJ buffs firerate and range or discounts upgrades. Those multipliers beat another average DPS tower on almost every serious clear.

When do I start learning Railgunner?

Unlock it during Intermediate practice and learn bottom-path boss targeting before you queue Expert. Do not wait until Nightmare to touch it.

Should beginners buy TB II towers immediately?

Unlock Scout, Aviator, Phaser, and Void Traitor through the event battle pass, but still keep Farm and EDJ in classic progression loadouts.

Where is the advanced ranking?

Use the Expert Tier List for Nightmare path tiers, then Best Loadouts for named squads.
