TB II Tower Defense X BETA Controls & Targeting Guide
PC hotkeys, mobile taps, dual-path upgrades, sell timing, and every targeting mode explained.
Tower Defense X rewards fast hands. Expert, Endless, Nightmare, and Tower Battles Part II Hard+ fill the screen with air units, stealth packs, and bosses that delete towers. Learning controls before those modes saves more runs than another expensive unlock. This guide covers PC hotkeys, mobile / touch flow, dual-path upgrades, sell and ability timing, camera habits, and the five core targeting modes.
If you are still onboarding, pair this page with Getting Started. When you are ready for the first serious skill check, jump to How to Beat Expert.
PC hotkeys (primary)
JOHN ROBLOX’s advisor tips call out hotkeys early for a reason—mouse-only play is too slow once multiple towers need upgrades in the same wave.
| Action | Default |
|---|---|
| Select loadout tower 1–6 | 1 2 3 4 5 6 |
| Cancel placement | Q |
| Upgrade top path | E |
| Upgrade bottom path | R |
| Place multiple of the same tower | Hold Left Shift while placing |
| Sell selected tower | Backspace |
| Use tower ability | G (additional abilities may use nearby keys such as H / J on some towers) |
| Cycle targeting | C / V (or on-tower targeting buttons) |
| Move / sprint / jump | WASD, hold Shift to run, Space to jump |
| Interact | F |
| Emote | B |
Tips that matter in real matches:
- Select with number keys, then click to place—do not drag from the hotbar every time.
- Hold Shift to spam cheap bait or Farm pads when a boss needs bodies.
- Sell with Backspace the moment a tower can no longer hit the current threat or is about to die for free.
- Practice
E/Runtil path choice is instant; hesitating on a 4-2 versus 2-4 decision loses Expert mid-game.
Mobile and touch controls
On phone or tablet you tap the tower slot, tap the ground to place, then open the selected tower panel for upgrades, sell, ability, and targeting. There is no keyboard, so build habits that reduce panel hunting:
- Place your economy and core DPS first so later taps are mostly upgrades, not new placements.
- Keep support towers (EDJ, Medic) clustered so one camera angle covers their panels.
- Change targeting before stressful waves, not during them.
- Use co-op when possible—four players means fewer towers each person must micro.
Gamepad users get stick movement, bumper tower select, face-button upgrade / sell / ability, and D-pad targeting. If you play on controller, rebind in Roblox settings until upgrade and sell feel as fast as keyboard.
Placement, rotation, and line of sight
Click / tap to place. Many towers can be rotated during placement (hold the tower key and press R on PC, or use the rotate control on other devices). Rotation matters for directional weapons and for fitting hitboxes on tight chokepoints.
TDX respects line of sight. A tower behind a wall or beam may show range but never shoot the lane you intended. After placing, watch the first few enemies: if shots never leave the barrel, relocate immediately instead of dumping upgrades into a blind spot.
Sea lanes need sea towers. If the map shows water paths, bring Warship or another naval option from Towers Overview or you will leak regardless of land DPS.
Dual-path upgrades
Every tower has a top path and a bottom path. Early mixed tiers (2-3, 3-2) are normal; deep investment into one max path is usually stronger than two half-upgraded clones. Path choice changes:
- Damage type and resistance coverage
- Range and firerate
- Stealth detection and air targeting
- Active abilities and buffs
Example mindset: EDJ top path leans firerate / range buffs and Encore-style ability value; bottom path leans upgrade discounts that make Juggernaut and Railgunner affordable. Juggernaut paths trade range versus raw DPS. Learn the path you need for the mode, then commit Cash instead of spreading upgrades evenly.
Full path roles for the roster live on Towers Overview and the Tier List hubs.
Targeting modes explained
Open a placed tower and cycle targeting. The five modes you will use constantly:
| Mode | Behavior | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| First | Enemy furthest along the path | Default lane clear; leak prevention |
| Last | Enemy least far along the path | Focus backline summons, support killers, or bosses that spawn behind trash |
| Strongest | Highest HP / threat priority in range | Boss melts, high-HP elites |
| Weakest | Lowest HP in range | Cleaning nearly-dead stragglers so First towers stay on the front |
| Closest | Nearest enemy to the tower | Point defense when something hugs your placement |
Some towers add special modes (for example Elite priority on Sniper). Set modes before the wave that needs them. Common Expert habits:
- Keep early chain DPS on First.
- Swap boss nukers to Strongest when the finale enters range.
- Use Last on selected towers when a dangerous unit spawns behind a swarm.
- Avoid leaving everything on Last by accident—the tutorial historically removed targeting for a reason; wrong defaults wipe Easy players too.
Sell, abilities, and tower HP
Towers have HP. Bosses stun, corrupt, and destroy. Controls that matter under pressure:
- Sell doomed or useless towers for Cash and a free slot.
- Ability (
G) on cooldown windows—John rage, Medic Uber, EDJ Encore, airstrike call boxes in events, and similar tools win fights when pressed on time. - Replace after sells; do not stare at an empty pad during Void God or Eradicator phases.
During Tower Battles Part II Hard+, camp near GDA Airstrike call boxes when Void God winds up Extinction Event. Missing the interrupt lets the slam stun your Medic line—details in Void God.
Camera and UI habits
- Zoom out enough to see the full critical lane, then zoom in only to place precision towers.
- Bind or memorize where Cash, Gold, Crystals, and the six slots sit so you never hunt HUD mid-fight.
- In co-op, agree who micros which cluster so two players do not fight over the same tower panel.
- After a wipe, note whether the failure was placement, path choice, or targeting—not just “need better towers.”
Practice plan
- Run one Easy match using only hotkeys for place,
E/Rupgrade, andBackspacesell. - On Intermediate, force at least one targeting swap to Strongest on a boss wave.
- On Elite, practice Shift-place bait and mid-wave sells.
- Before Expert, confirm your six-slot loadout on Best Loadouts and read How to Beat Expert.
- For event Token grinds, keep Casual micro light and save heavy airstrike / Medic micro for Hard+ (Battle Pass, Gold Farming).
Mastering controls will not replace a good roster, but a good roster without hotkeys and targeting discipline still leaks Expert. Build the muscle memory now while waves are slow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Tower Defense X questions.
What are the most important TDX PC hotkeys?
1–6 select towers, Q cancels placement, E upgrades top path, R upgrades bottom path, Backspace sells, G fires abilities, and C/V cycle targeting.
When should I use Strongest targeting?
Use Strongest when a high-HP boss or elite enters range and you need dedicated towers to ignore trash packs.
How do dual paths work?
Each tower has top and bottom upgrade lines. Mix early tiers, then commit Cash into the path that gives the detection, damage type, or ability your mode needs.
Why sell towers mid-match?
Selling refunds Cash, frees a placement slot, and removes towers that can no longer hit the current threat or are about to die for nothing.
Do mobile players need this guide?
Yes. Touch players still must master targeting, path choice, sell timing, and ability windows—even without keyboard hotkeys.
