TB II Tower Defense X BETA TDX Crystals & Ronald Guide
Crystal-border unlocks, Nightmare farms, quests, Battle Pass, Robux, and why Ronald is usually a bad early trade.
Crystals are Tower Defense X’s premium progression currency. Shop items with a crystal (light-blue) border—certain towers and power-ups—cost Crystals instead of Gold. Gold still buys the green-border permanent roster that carries you through Intermediate and Expert; Crystals unlock the next layer once Nightmare and late content matter. This guide covers how to earn Crystals honestly, how the lobby NPC Ronald works, and why new players should almost never dump Gold into his booth.
Build Gold first with Gold Farming and Getting Started. Know which crystal-border towers actually fill a hole using Towers Overview. Redeem free bursts from Codes whenever they drop Crystals or Gold.
What Crystals buy
Crystals purchase:
- Crystal-border towers that sit behind the Gold shop wall
- Crystal-border power-ups and related premium combat consumables
- Occasional event or shop bundles that list Crystal prices
If an item shows a light-blue Crystal border, Gold will not buy it. Plan Crystal spending the same way you plan Gold: fill a role hole (sustain, late DPS, specialty coverage) before cosmetics. A crystal tower you never place is worse than one more Expert medal farm.
How to earn Crystals
| Source | Who it is for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nightmare clears / medals | Endgame accounts | Best organic Crystal rate when you can actually win |
| Quests | Daily / weekly players | Mix of Gold, Crystals, Tokens, XP by level bracket |
| Battle Pass | Event seasons (incl. TB II) | Claim tiers that list Crystal rewards |
| Achievements | Long-term collection | One-time Crystal lumps |
| Codes | Everyone | Time-sensitive; redeem same day |
| Robux | Optional wallet | Fastest, not required for core Gold towers |
| Ronald (Gold → Crystals) | Gold-rich veterans only | Terrible rates; see below |
Nightmare (and Ultra variants when live) is the Crystal farm you are building toward. Treat it like endgame: Medic lines, maxed supports, and co-op roles matter more than greed. If you wipe often, your Crystal / hour is near zero—drop to Expert medals and Gold farms until clears stick. Expert still contributes light Crystal progress via medals and mode rewards, but Nightmare is the dedicated Crystal ladder.
Quests and Battle Pass Crystals are “free” relative to Ronald. Log in, clear the easy daily set, claim pass tiers, then decide whether you have focus for a Nightmare session. During Tower Battles Part II, Token goals and Crystal goals can compete for the same hour—pick one primary currency per session so you do not half-finish both.
Ronald: lobby schedule and trades
Ronald is a GDA lobby NPC near the spawn pad. Server shout copy roughly says he is visiting—go get Crystals now. Mechanics players rely on:
- Teleports into the lobby about every 2 hours
- Stays roughly 1 hour per visit
- Converts Gold → Crystals at a bad floating rate, commonly 50–200 Gold per 1 Crystal
- Caps exchanges around 100–200 Crystals per appearance
- Also converts Crystals → Cookies when Cookie shop items matter for events
- Refresh for more volume at the same visit rate costs 45 Robux
Those numbers make Ronald a luxury sink, not a progression engine. Even at the “good” end of 50 Gold per Crystal, buying a multi-thousand Crystal tower costs a mountain of Gold that could have unlocked Farm, EDJ, Juggernaut, Laser Gunner, Railgunner, Medic, and more. At 200 Gold per Crystal the math is insulting. The per-visit cap also means you cannot dump an entire wallet in one sitting without paying Robux to refresh.
When to ignore Ronald
New and mid-game players should not use Ronald. If any important Gold tower is still locked, every Gold piece belongs in the shop or in rewind / utility decisions—not in a 50–200:1 Crystal booth. Community advice is consistent: only trade when you already own the towers you want and are sitting on surplus Gold with a clear Crystal target.
Also skip Ronald when:
- Your next unlock is a Gold-border tower on the Beginner or Expert path
- You still need Gold for Endless / Expert practice hours documented in Gold Farming
- The live rate is on the ugly end of the 50–200 band and you can wait for Nightmare clears instead
- You are tempted to refresh with Robux “just to finish” a cosmetic
When Ronald is acceptable
- Permanent Gold roster finished for your current goals
- A specific crystal-border tower or power-up is the bottleneck
- Rate is closer to 50 than 200 and the visit cap still gets you meaningful progress
- You understand Cookies trades are event-timed, not a substitute for Nightmare income
Even then, prefer Nightmare farms + quests + Battle Pass as the default Crystal plan. Ronald is optional overflow.
Nightmare Crystal farm mindset
- Stabilize Expert first (How to Beat Expert).
- Unlock healing and late DPS so tower HP survives return fire.
- Queue Nightmare with a role-covered squad from Best Loadouts / Towers Overview.
- Track Crystals earned versus minutes; failed deep runs destroy rate.
- Spend Crystals the same day on the planned unlock—do not hoard forever while another Gold gap sits open.
If TB II Nightmare / Voidmare is your current grind, remember Tokens and Crystals can both drop from high difficulties, but micro intensity differs. Burnout from forcing Voidmare when Hard or classic Nightmare would pay better weekly totals is a real loss.
Session templates
Crystal-focused evening
- Redeem Codes and claim quest / pass Crystals.
- One or two Nightmare clears you can actually finish.
- Check Ronald only if surplus Gold remains after any Gold shop priorities.
- Buy the next crystal-border need; stop.
New-account rule
- Never open Ronald’s menu to “try a little.”
- Spend Gold on economy and coverage towers.
- Use codes, group Cash, Intermediate / Elite / Expert for Gold.
- Revisit Crystals when Nightmare is on the menu.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Tower Defense X questions.
What are Crystals used for in TDX?
Crystals buy crystal-border (light-blue) towers and power-ups. Gold still buys the standard green-border permanent roster.
What is the best way to farm Crystals?
Nightmare clears and medals once you can win them, plus quests, Battle Pass claims, achievements, and codes. Ronald is a last resort for Gold-rich veterans.
How does Ronald work?
He visits the lobby about every 2 hours for roughly 1 hour, converts Gold to Crystals at about 50–200 Gold each (cap ~100–200 per visit), can trade Crystals for Cookies, and refreshes for 45 Robux.
Should new players use Ronald?
No. Rates are poor and Gold should unlock towers first. Only trade surplus Gold after you own the roster pieces you need.
Is buying Crystals with Robux required?
No. Robux is the fastest option, but Nightmare, quests, Battle Pass, and codes cover progression for players who prefer to grind.
