Dual Upgrade Paths

Every permanent tower in Tower Defense X upgrades along a top path and a bottom path. Those routes are not skins—they change targeting, abilities, cost curves, and the job the tower can fill inside a six-slot loadout. Players who treat “Railgunner” as one unit lose Expert bosses; players who treat “bottom Railgunner” as a funded boss gun win. This guide covers how dual paths work, when to mix mid tiers, when to commit, and how path choices ripple through Farm, EDJ, John, and carry slots.

Pair this page with Towers Overview for role language, the Tier List Hub for ranked paths, Best Loadouts for finished squads, Controls for targeting while you upgrade, and Getting Started if you are still unlocking the core roster.

How dual paths work

Notation uses top-bottom numbers. A 3-2 tower has three top-path upgrades and two bottom-path upgrades. A 5-2 tower maxed the top line while keeping two bottom upgrades; a 2-5 did the opposite. You almost never end a serious clear at 5-5—cash, path lock rules, and diminishing returns push you to commit one side.

Early in a match you can (and should) mix mid tiers. Buying shared early upgrades on both sides unlocks utility without burning the Cash you need for Farm and EDJ. Community play commonly describes a soft path lock as you approach high tiers: once you push deep on one path, the opposite path stops at a low ceiling (players talk about finishing runs as 5-2 or 2-5, not dual-maxed monsters). Exact lock breakpoints can shift with patches, but the habit stays the same:

  1. Open both paths through cheap mid tiers when both sides give useful tools.
  2. Decide the tower’s job for this mode and map.
  3. Commit Cash into one max path and leave the other at support depth.
  4. Do not waffle—half-finished 4-3 lines waste the economy Farm was printing.

If you are unsure which path to finish, check the Expert Tier List before the match, not during wave 30 panic.

Mid-tier mixing then commit

A clean tempo looks like this on a carry or support:

StageTypical board stateGoal
Early1-1 / 2-1 / 2-2Survive, unlock detection or income
Mid3-2 or 2-3Both paths contribute; cash still flexible
Commit4-2 → 5-2 or 2-4 → 2-5One identity finished
LateSell dead weight, fund another 5-2 / 2-5Convert economy into DPS

3-2 (or 2-3) is the decision window. Past that, every Cash dump should answer “does this finish the path that matches my job?” If the answer is no, sell and rebuild rather than forcing a confused tower.

Hotkeys from Controls matter here: fast upgrade and sell cycles let you fix a wrong commit before the next boss script arrives.

Example: EDJ top firerate vs bottom discount

EDJ deals no damage and still defines Expert clears.

  • Top path — range and firerate buffs, including Encore-style windows that spike nearby DPS. Bring this when your Railgunners and Laser Gunners are already upgraded and need output, not cheaper bills.
  • Bottom path — upgrade discounts (community notes peak around 30% on max). Bring this when you are still climbing expensive lines—bottom Railgunner, Juggernaut / Golden Juggernaut, late Factories.

Practical habit: open bottom EDJ while the board is hungry for discounts, then add or lean into top EDJ once the expensive upgrades are finished and you need firerate/range. Co-op teams often split the two paths across players so both auras exist. Aura placement is the skill check—hug the DPS cluster, not an empty corner.

Example: Railgunner bottom boss gun

Bottom Railgunner is the classic Expert boss and armored answer: huge pierce damage, long range, stun resilience, steep cost, long aim time, and weak stealth detection. Fund it with Farm and bottom EDJ; pair it with Laser Gunner stealth sensor or another reveal so invisible packs do not stroll past your “boss laser.”

Top Railgunner is a different tool—faster, cheaper, better detection package, less raw boss melt. Ranking “Railgunner” without the path is how beginners waste Gold unlocks and mid-match Cash. On Best Loadouts Greenlight-style Expert spines, the note is almost always bottom for the boss slot.

Set Strongest when bosses spawn; do not leave the gun on First while a sponge walks the lane.

Example: John top amp

Top John is the Expert favorite for damage amplification and bait bodies. Rage-style windows spike Laser Gunner, Juggernaut, and Railgunner clusters when timed into boss HP. Place John so the amp actually touches carries—edge placements that buff nothing are dead slots.

Bottom John shifts toward a different combat profile; treat it as a separate draft choice, not a “wrong John.” If your loadout already has EDJ firerate and you still need amp, top John is usually the sixth-slot answer before stacking another pure DPS tower.

Example: Farm income paths

Farm prints the Cash that makes path commits possible. Both income routes stay meta; players often prefer the bottom curve for early-to-mid cost efficiency and lean top later when long Expert / Endless games can amortize expensive crates and value-adjacent income. Upgrade Farms between waves when possible so the next wave inherits the new income. Pause Farm investment only when a leak is imminent—starving economy to buy one flashy DPS upgrade is how path commits arrive two waves too late.

Protect Farms from return fire. A dead Farm is a failed dual-path plan for every expensive tower on the board.

How paths reshape six-tower loadouts

You only bring six towers. Path identity multiplies that constraint:

Slot jobPath-sensitive pickWrong path failure mode
EconomyFarm income routeLate Railgunner / GJ upgrades
SupportEDJ top or bottomNo discounts or no firerate when you needed the other
Stealth DPSLaser Gunner detection routeInvisible leaks while boss gun stares
Boss answerRailgunner bottomSoft DPS that cannot finish bosses
Amp / baitJohn topAmp missing when scripts spike
FlexMedic, Warship, Missile Trooper, TB II towerCoverage hole (HP, sea, AoE, event)

Draft the path, not just the tower name. A six-slot list of “Farm, EDJ, Laser Gunner, Railgunner, John, Medic” is incomplete until you write which path each one finishes. Named squads on Best Loadouts already do that work—copy the path notes, then adjust flex for map lanes.

Co-op multiplies path value: one player bottom EDJ, another top EDJ; one bottom Railgunner, another stealth Laser Gunner. Duplicate wrong paths (two unfinished top Railgunners, zero detection) still wipe.

Practice drills

  1. On Intermediate, force a 3-2 → 5-2 commit on one support and one DPS so the decision window feels automatic.
  2. Run one Expert clear where every tower’s end state is written on paper before wave 1.
  3. Replay a wipe and ask whether the loss was tower choice or path choice.
  4. Cross-check unlock order on the Beginner Tier List so you are not maxing vanity paths before Farm and EDJ exist.

Mix mid tiers for flexibility, commit when the job is clear, and fund the path that matches the mode. That is the dual-upgrade skill TDX actually rewards.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Tower Defense X questions.

What are dual upgrade paths in Tower Defense X?

Every tower has a top path and a bottom path with different kits. Notation like 5-2 means max top with two bottom upgrades; you commit one side rather than maxing both.

Should I mix both paths or commit early?

Mix through mid tiers such as 3-2 for flexibility, then commit Cash into one max path (5-2 or 2-5 style) once the tower’s job for the match is clear.

Is EDJ top or bottom better?

Bottom discounts expensive upgrades; top buffs firerate and range. Many clears use bottom while funding carries, then lean top once upgrades are finished—or split paths in co-op.

Which Railgunner path should I use for bosses?

Bottom Railgunner is the standard Expert boss and armored answer. Fund it with Farm and EDJ, and bring stealth detection from another tower.

How do dual paths affect my six-tower loadout?

Six slots force role coverage. Draft the path for each job—Farm income, EDJ support side, Laser Gunner stealth, bottom Railgunner, top John—then fill flex for Medic, Warship, or event towers.
