TB II Tower Defense X BETA Expert & Nightmare Path Tier List

S-tier dual-path rankings for Expert, Nightmare, Endless pressure, and TB II high difficulties.

Expert Tier List

Expert and Nightmare in Tower Defense X punish incomplete loadouts. You need economy, stealth answers, boss damage, tower HP sustain, and sometimes sea coverage — all while dual paths force hard upgrade choices. This list ranks paths, not just tower names, for classic Expert / Nightmare and for high TB II difficulties where Void pressure mirrors the same fundamentals. Cross-check squad comps on Best Loadouts and mechanics on How to Beat Expert.

Ranking criteria

  • Clear reliability on Expert and Nightmare wave scripts
  • Path identity (top vs bottom must be named)
  • Role compression — how many problems one slot solves
  • Synergy with EDJ / Farm / John support spine
  • Leak prevention for stealth, air, and sea

S-tier means you should have a plan for this tower in serious clears. A-tier means excellent situational or secondary picks. Lower ranks are omitted here so the page stays actionable; see Towers Overview for the wider roster.

S-tier (Expert / Nightmare)

EDJ — both paths

EDJ is the consensus support S-tier. Top path pushes firerate and range so Laser Gunner, Juggernaut, and Missile Trooper melt packs sooner. Bottom path discounts upgrades, which is how you afford bottom Railgunner and Golden Juggernaut before the boss window. Many squads run EDJ coverage as non-negotiable. Place it to hug your DPS cluster; a lonely EDJ is a wasted legendary slot.

Laser Gunner — stealth-capable DPS

Laser Gunner earns S for consistent DPS plus stealth solutions that prevent silent base deaths. On Expert, missing detection is a wipe condition. Keep Laser Gunner upgraded through mid-game even if a Railgunner is your late boss carry.

Railgunner — bottom path (boss)

Bottom Railgunner is the premier high-HP / armored boss answer: massive damage, range, and stun resilience at the cost of cash, aim time, and often stealth detection. Fund it with Farm and bottom EDJ. Set Strongest targeting when bosses spawn, and cover fast leftovers with Laser Gunner or Missile Trooper. Top path Railgunner is not the same ranking — do not confuse them.

Juggernaut / Golden Juggernaut

Juggernaut lines provide the HP-aware frontline DPS Expert needs when enemies shoot your towers. Golden Juggernaut is a premier endgame investment for Nightmare and long Endless stretches. Pair with Medic so your expensive placement does not evaporate to focus fire.

Farm

Farm remains S because Expert upgrade curves are brutal. Boards that skip economy look strong for ten waves and then fail to finish Railgunner or GJ paths. Protect Farms; dead income is a delayed wipe.

John — top path

Top John amplifies nearby damage and creates power spikes during Rage windows. In Expert clears he turns a good Laser Gunner wall into a great one. Timing abilities matters more than raw placement count.

Missile Trooper

Missile Trooper holds S for burst and mid-game density. When chargers and mixed packs threaten to slip past slow boss guns, Missile Trooper cleans the lane. Excellent glue between early Laser Gunner and late Railgunner.

High A-tier supports and specialists

Medic

Medic is A-high / soft-S on maps where tower HP is constantly tested. Expert enemies that shoot back make Medic the difference between a stable GJ and a sold wreck. Bring Medic whenever you invest heavily in expensive placements.

Commander

Commander stacks with EDJ and John for board-wide combat buffs. Slightly more timing-sensitive than EDJ, but elite in coordinated multiplayer and polished solo routes.

Warship — sea maps

Warship is situational S: if the map has water and your squad is all land, you will leak. On pure land maps it can sit out. Always check lane types before locking the fifth and sixth slots.

TB II high-difficulty notes

In TB II Collab modes (Hard, Nightmare, Voidmare), keep the classic spine and evaluate event towers as flexible slots. Dual-path choices still matter — refresh Dual Upgrade Paths if you are mixing event towers into Expert grammar:

  • Scout — early pressure plus a stealth-detection aura for nearby towers. Excellent early support / flex that can free Laser Gunner into pure DPS once the aura covers the choke.
  • Aviator — dedicated air DPS. Promote Aviator whenever Void or Expert air packs outpace your land core; keep EDJ in range so firerate stays competitive.
  • Phaser — single-target laser carry for armored elites and dense Void waves. Pairs with Medic so the laser pad survives focus fire; high ceiling when micro is clean.
  • Void Traitor — ability-heavy late battle-pass pick. The Oct 1 balance pass made Traitor a real Voidmare / Nightmare flex when abilities are funded on schedule — learn cooldowns on Hard first.

Casual is for learning and token / battle pass farming; do not confuse Casual success with Voidmare readiness. For the final boss route see Void God.

How to build from this list

  1. Lock Farm + EDJ + Laser Gunner as the default spine.
  2. Add bottom Railgunner or Juggernaut / GJ as the heavy carry based on boss script.
  3. Fill the last slots with John, Missile Trooper, Medic, Commander, or Warship based on map threats.
  4. On TB II maps, swap one flexible slot for Scout / Aviator / Phaser / Void Traitor after the spine is funded.
  5. Practice the full clear using How to Beat Expert and compare finished squads on Best Loadouts.

Beginners who landed here early should back up to the Beginner Tier List until Intermediate is consistent. For gold to afford these upgrades, use Gold Farming. Scripts and automation talk belongs on Scripts — this page is about legitimate tower skill.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Tower Defense X questions.

What is S-tier on Expert in Tower Defense X right now?

EDJ (both paths), Laser Gunner, bottom Railgunner, Juggernaut / Golden Juggernaut, Farm, top John, and Missile Trooper form the core S ranks, with Medic, Commander, and Warship as elite situational picks.

Why is bottom Railgunner ranked above other boss options?

Bottom path delivers massive single-target damage, range, and stun resilience that Expert bosses demand. It is expensive, so Farm and bottom EDJ are part of the package.

Do I need Warship on every Expert map?

No. Warship is mandatory when sea lanes exist and optional on pure land maps. Always scout lane types before locking the loadout.

How should I use TB II towers on Nightmare?

Keep Farm, EDJ, and stealth DPS, then slot Scout, Aviator, Phaser, or Void Traitor into a flexible position after you learn each tower in Casual or Hard.

Where can I see full named squads?

Open Best Loadouts for Expert, Endless, and TB II Nightmare or Casual token farm compositions.
